paintings
This series of paintings, all 18" square, began from a desire to let go of a dependence on source/reference material and paint from the inside out. By doing this I hoped to find my own way of responding to the process of painting and develop a relationship with the painting rather than just going about replicating something from reality as I saw it with my eyes.
The process and resultant paintings became about being and becoming and looking inward. I let go of the preciousness of the surface, overpainted and rubbed back to previous layers and got juicy with the pigment sticks while trying to lighten my color palette. I allowed the geometric layins (you have to begin somewhere) to evolve into spaces which are evocative of interiors spaces. Portals, doorways, pathways, walls and other interior elements emerged from the way the paint was applied and layered onto the canvas. At some point in the process of the painting an idea became evident, a title presented itself and the work followed. The cerulean blue marks, similar to the blue painter's tape used by house painters, flatten the space that was created from the intersection of walls and floors to bring the paintings back into the abstract realm and act as a symbol of the painters' presence with the work.
