This book has been a bit of a bible/parenting manual/self-help book for me for the past few years, or at least a way for me to rationalize the uncompensated path my career has taken me on. In a nutshell, A Whole New Mind is about: “Lawyers. Accountants. Computer programmers. That’s what our parents encouraged us to become when we grew up. But Mom and Dad were wrong. The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind. The era of “left brain” dominance, and the Information Age that it engendered, are giving way to a new world in which “right brain” qualities-inventiveness, empathy, meaning-predominate. That’s the argument at the center of this provocative and original book, which uses the two sides of our brains as a metaphor for understanding the contours of our times.” Although I don’t believe the MFA is the new MBA (I hold court in both camps and it hasn’t netted me any fabulous corporate gigs), I do believe that every individual has the ability to train both sides of their brain and that collectively this connection between art & science, or design & math, will forge linkages that lead to new ways of thinking about things. This book was the motivation for me designing the art&science camps last summer with The Museum of Radio and Electricity. It has motivated me to find stories & meaning in my work. It has made me understand that the business behind being an artist is as relevant as being the artist. So here’s to working both sides of the aisle. Borrow my copy if you’d like.

Sharon Kingston is a Bellingham WA (Washington) based artist.  As an oil painter she uses the properties of her medium to create paintings that respond to both the atmosphere of her surroundings and poetry. This method of looking inward and outward and, in the moments of painting, finding her way on the canvas is her approach to creating paintings infused with poetry and the memory of landscape. The atmospheric element of her work is a testament to her desire to create spaces that are undefined, contemplative and allow room to reflect and accept uncertainty. Poetry, by nature open ended, is used both in the conceptualization of the work and as a part of the studio practice. The words of Rainer Rilke have informed Sharon’s work for many years, but she also turns to contemporary poetry when it resonates with her life. She uses layers of transparent color, reveals forms by concealing and unearthing pentimenti and suggests elements of landscape in her process.

People describe her paintings as ethereal, atmospheric, contemplative, PNW inspired, and filled with light and mood.  She has a storefront art studio in downtown Bellingham and welcomes you view her paintings in person.
